Taking the first step to make change in your life and accept support can sometimes feel the most challenging. As a counsellor at a sober living house for men struggling with addiction, I have extensive experience working with men from all walks of life, including those struggling with addiction, depression, grief, low self-esteem, anger, anxiety, and relationship issues. I understand that men often struggle with societal expectations of masculinity and the pressure to suppress their emotions, and use a holistic approach to help men address the underlying causes of their mental health concerns.

In my work, I have noticed men come to therapy for many reasons and express these needs from a therapist:

A safe and comfortable environment: I believe that men should feel that they can be open and honest with their therapist and that their therapist will provide a non-judgmental, supportive space for them to explore their thoughts and feelings.

A therapist who understands the unique challenges men face: Men may struggle with societal expectations of masculinity, pressure to suppress emotions, and stigma around seeking help. I am a therapist who understands these challenges can help men feel more comfortable and understood.

A focus on practical solutions: Men may be more motivated to work towards practical solutions rather than focusing on emotions and feelings. I aim to be a therapist that can provide men with practical strategies to help them overcome their challenges.

Emphasis on self-compassion and self-acceptance: Men often struggle with self-worth and self-esteem, and I believe that a therapist should teach men how to be kind and compassionate to themselves as well as acceptance for who they are.

Encourage men to take responsibility for their thoughts and feelings: Men are often taught to avoid vulnerability and emotional expression, but I believe that therapy can help men take ownership of their thoughts and feelings, which can be empowering and lead to positive change.

A willingness to address underlying issues: Men’s mental health issues may be rooted in past experiences or traumas. I strive to be a a therapist should be willing to help men explore these underlying issues and work through them to achieve long-term healing.

Some of my past clients have reached out because of interpersonal issues, addiction, or other mental health concerns. I have found it helpful to spend time trying to understand your past thinking and behaviour so that you can find meaning moving forward in your life. My goal is for you to have better insight into your self and for you to feel better equipped to deal with any challenges you are faced with in the future.

About Adam

In my own journey, a turning point occurred in 2016, shortly after I returned from Dubai and 10 years of life overseas. Faced with an existential crisis and challenging personal circumstances, I decided to take the first step and seek professional support. It wasn’t easy, particularly given that I had spent many years ignoring problems and seeking unhealthy ways to cope with life’s stresses. I was scared to open up to another person. Yet with each appointment I felt the fog had been lifted and I got to know myself better. Relationships with others began to improve and I began to seek healthier ways to live and relate. Having had experience in both the client’s and therapist’s chair, I know how scary and daunting it can feel to be in your shoes despite our own unique, individual story.

Therapy, particularly for men, can be an overwhelming and often stigmatizing experience. Many men have been raised to withhold or suppress their feelings, which can make taking the first step even more anxiety-provoking and stressful. Working with a qualified therapist offers one the opportunity to comfortably and safely discuss difficulties and challenges, learn and sharpen skills, and develop positive tools and resources aimed at living a healthier, more authentic life.

As the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu once said, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single “step”

I welcome the chance to begin this journey with you.

Bessel van der Kolk, M.D. asserts in his acclaimed book “The Body Keeps the Score” that “Neuroscience research shows that the only way we can change the way we feel is by becoming aware of our inner experience and learning to befriend what is going inside ourselves.” This perspective resonates deeply with my approach to psychotherapy.

In sessions, we will be holding the curiosity about your inner world and all levels of experiences, including emotional, cognitive, somatic, and relational. We will be exploring together what you deeply want for yourself – the Heart’s Desire - and what is in the way of that. I work with clients facing a wide range of challenges, including complex and childhood trauma, depression, anxiety, self-image and self-esteem, relational difficulties, attachment issues, substance misuse, personality patterns (borderline and narcissism), and more.

I use the NeuroAffective Relational Model® (NARM™) as the primary framework, an experiential approach integrating Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Attachment Theory, Somatic Psychology, Cognitive Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy. This approach creates a safe space that supports us in delving into the core of your experiences and uncover what may be holding you back from connecting with yourself and others.

Although we can’t fix what has happened in the past, my role is to support you in restoring your innate capacity for heal and connection. Together, we will explore and address any obstacles that may be hindering your growth and create the right condition where you can heal from difficult experiences and emerge stronger.

My practice is characterized by a delicate balance between addressing immediate needs and delving into the origins of issues, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the paths that have led you to this moment.

In the therapeutic space I hold for my clients, empathy and understanding are foundational. I see each individual through the lens of their best selves, supporting their growth through a variety of therapeutic interventions. Working with a diverse range of ages and stages, I am committed to tailoring my approach to meet the unique needs of each person who walks through my door.

As a man with personal and professional experiences regarding popular perceptions and internalized impressions of boyhood and masculinity, I have great appreciation for the unique mental health realities and challenges that men face. Recognizing the stigma and possible shame associated with seeking out therapeutic services and the consequential reality that men can struggle in silence, I believe it takes great courage and strength to seek out help.

I am extremely motivated by the opportunity to accompany men as they open the doors and learn about themselves, reflect on their past and current experiences, and acquire the necessary tools and skills to effectively navigate their challenges and meet their needs. It is my goal to make mental health interventions relatable, safe, beneficial and tailored to each person’s needs.

As men, we tend to be our own worst critic and can have rigid expectations towards ourselves, which can have an important impact on the relationship we foster and maintain with our own person and with our environment. There is no health without mental health, and mental health can be more than the absence of mental illness. You deserve to have your mental health and wellbeing tended to- we train our physical health, we can also train our mental health.

Men can expect to be greeted in a non-judgmental, open and respectful environment, and to feel heard, supported and encouraged as they take steps in their desired direction. I am committed to making each person’s therapeutic goals, our goals, and to walking the journey with you.

You deserve this. I look forward to joining you on your journey of growth, discovery, and healing.

Hello and welcome! Taking this first step towards healing can be daunting, and I am so glad that you are here. Many men struggle with feeling alone and unheard, and rarely have a safe space carved out to explore their emotional experiences. With the knowledge that there is often stigma surrounding the act of seeking help, my primary goal with clients is to co-create the warm, safe space that is needed to begin processing and facilitate healing. My practice is based on a holistic approach, which allows us to explore all areas of your life (physical, mental, emotional, social, or spiritual) and how they connect to your current mental health needs.

Having experience working with people who are justice involved, insecurely housed, and using drugs has helped me to understand that unwanted behaviours are typically responses to unmet needs. Together, we can explore your needs, increase internal awareness, improve communication skills and relationship satisfaction, expand confidence, and integrate more helpful coping strategies into your daily routine. My hope is to empower my clients to reclaim their experiences, access their inherent strengths, and strengthen the relationships held with others and themselves.

I apply an integrative approach to therapy in order to tailor treatment plans to each specific individual that I work with. Pulling frequently from empirically supported modalities such as cognitive behavioural therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, solution-focused therapy, person-centered therapy, trauma-informed practice, and Gestalt therapy, I aim to weave interventions into sessions that will suite each individual client and support their specific goals.

I warmly offer inclusive services for individuals of all sexual orientations, gender identities and expressions, races, ethnicities, abilities, spiritual beliefs, treaty or band status, and citizenship status. My practice operates with a sex-positive lens, offering knowledge and compassion towards topics related to 2SLGBTQIA+, poly dynamics, kink, and CNM. Other areas of specialization include, but are not limited to; anxiety, depression, adverse childhood experiences, addiction, burn out, emotional regulation, communication techniques, identity issues, sexuality, gender identity and expression, self-harm, and poor self-esteem.

I look forward to connecting with you!
